Fact Sheet

1. Who is Barbara Antonsen?

Barbara Antonsen was instrumental in saving the 8.63 acres that was surrounded by the Posse Ground Community Park from an institutional taking by Yavapai College. The College withdrew its option for institutional taking in 1993 and the City purchased the acreage in 1994. The City Council on December 10, 2002 approved naming this area in honor of Barbara Antonsen.

2. What will this Memorial Park consist of?

  • Restoration of the stage area
  • Green space for event audience and picnics
  • Picnic tables and benches
  • Preservation of the history of the site

3. What Sedona history does this site represent?

  • First Sedona Art Festival
  • Jazz on the Rocks
  • Pop's Concert
  • Living Legends

The Posse Ground Community Park has played host to rodeos, chuck wagon dinners, Country Fairs, St. Patrick Day Barbecues, Easter egg hunts, etc.

4. Will there be night performances?

No, this will be a day use only facility for family celebrations, small theatrical, musical and art events. The music level must adhere to the sound ordinance regulations.

5. What about traffic?

The parking area adjacent to the ball fields will be paved and delineated by June of 2005. There is also a provision in the design for a trolley drop off point. The Park and Recreation Department is working with the Engineering Department to try and facilitate making Posse Grounds a one-way road so that traffic will leave the park via Carruth and down Soldier Pass Road at the lighted intersection.

6. Shouldn't there be concern over usage of water with respect to the green space?

We want this project to be a model for "Sustainable Arizona". We are investigating the type of grass to be utilized as well as a new process for irrigation called "Geoflow", a subsurface system that cuts water usage by up to 50. All the benches and picnic tables will be of recycled material, the stage cover will be of weathered steel for low maintenance, and the pillars will be of red rock material.

7. Who will pay for this project?

The City has invested a small amount of seed money in this project but the balance of funding will be raised through the Friends of Posse Ground Park in honor of Barbara.
